About James

I am currently a 2nd Year student at the University of Reading studying a BSc Management with Information Technology course. I also run my own business alongside studying in University. My business is a blog page called Sweeney’s Blogs. On Sweeney’s Blogs I write about topics such as Stuttering, Stress and Mental Health with the aim of helping raise awareness about those topics. I have also got a business partnership with HHRUK where I write blogs and courses for them on a vast array of different subjects.

For the competition, I have written a poem about the theme “Going it Alone”. My poems main aim is to capture true emotion through storytelling. The first three verses of the poem talk about the Welsh traditional story of Gelert the Dog whose life ended with him feeling very alone. The next paragraph is about a widow of war. The next paragraph is about a boy being bullied in school which reflects how I felt when being bullied through school. The last story is about a promise that I made to my grandmother with Alzheimer’s.

Going it Alone Poem

As I meander through life’s many twists and bends,

I usually feel so very alone,

Despite surrounding myself with both close family and friends,

My mind often drifts towards the unknown.

As I recall the story of Beddgelert and the tale of Gelert the Dog,

My mind starts to drift, and my thoughts, they do backlog,

My sense of reality slowly becomes enveloped in a deep fog,

As the meaning behind the tale becomes apparent throughout the epilogue.

A companion and friend ushered forth to an early grave,

Slain wrongfully by his master, much like a disobedient slave,

Gelert was friendly and kind and for all the love he had, he gave,

A lifelong friend ultimately killed due to him being brave.

As Gelert life’s ended feeling as though he was going through it all alone,

His life regretfully ended with him being the dog without a bone,

A brave, loyal and compassionate hound,

There would be no other like Gelert for Prince Llewelyn around.

As I meander through life’s many twists and bends,

I usually feel so very alone,

Despite surrounding myself with close family and friends,

My mind often drifts towards the unknown.

When you feel as overwhelmed as a widow whose husband was lost to war,

It can leave you feeling shaken, right to the very core,

Although you always try and find a way to pick yourself up from the floor,

You never find the right way and are left feeling broken and sore.

Like a child being bullied by another in school,

We can often get caught up with how things can be so cruel,

These feelings can become too much for us and we think ourselves a fool,

When in reality we are simply not yet equipped with the right tool,

You’re never alone when your passion and motivation are too many a fuel,

You can keep on going and going to find your inner jewel.

Just like a grandson watching his grandmother’s memories disappear,

Watching their childhood icon soon start to lose their cheer,

As her Alzheimer’s progresses, seemingly shifting to a higher gear,

He prays that the end for them is not very near,

As his smile disappears and down his face rolls a tear,

He hugs and holds his grandmother close and tells here he’ll always be near.

No matter how far you stray or alone you feel,

I’ll always be by your side, that is our silent deal,

Whether we are out walking or sitting down for a meal,

We’ll make newer, better memories, those of which are true and real.

As I meander through life’s many twists and bends,

I usually feel so very alone,

Despite surrounding myself with close family and friends,

My mind often drifts towards the unknown.
