Staycation: Countryside Breaks

In the final post in our staycation series we look at places to go for a countryside break. From the beautiful beaches of Cornwall, to the racecourse at Goodwood. We’ve shared our favourite places to go, where to eat and what to do…

Cornwall

If you are blessed with good weather, being in Cornwall can feel like you’re in the Caribbean. One of our favourite places to go in Cornwall is Padstow and the surrounding areas. The sandy beaches, unbelievable coastline views and amazing seafood restaurants just keep on giving!

Things to Do…

Padstow itself is a very picturesque fishing harbour. It feels a bit like restaurant owner and celebrity chef Rick Stein should rename the town #Padstein, as amongst a fine dining and a bistro restaurant, Mr Stein serves up the best fish and chips in town. You can see why he’s popular! Stein’s Fish & Chips is worth a visit, but get there when it opens at 12 to avoid the queues… Order takeaway, sit by the harbour and then wander round the shops in the town.

Like to cycle? Then The Camel Trail is for you. Hire a bike in Padstow and embark on a stunning countryside bike ride, cycling along coastline, through woodland and along disused railways. The whole trail is a whopping 18 miles, so it’s not for the fainthearted, but it’s mostly flat and traffic-free. Also, there is a 5-mile option from Padstow to Wadebridge if you’re looking for something a little less strenuous.

Visit beautiful beaches just a few miles along the coast, West of Padstow. If you want to surf, head to Treyarnon. Or for calmer water, spend the day at Constantine or Booby’s Bay. All three connect on a beautiful headland walk up to Trevose Head.

West Sussex

There are plenty of picturesque spots to explore in West Sussex, from coastline walks, to a day at the races. We’ve listed a few of our favourite things to do in the area.

Chilgrove

Have a drink, or a bite to eat at The White Horse Pub & Inn. It’s nestled at the foot of the South Downs, offering boutique bedrooms and delicious food! This is the perfect spot to stay after a day at Goodwood Racecourse, which is renowned for being the most beautiful racecourse in the world.

Even if horse racing isn’t your thing, Goodwood has a plethora of weird and wonderful events all summer. The summer barn dance is coming up next week! Check out their events calendar here.

On the Coast

Have brunch at Billy’s on the Beach, a popular and quirky seaside cafe in Bracklesham Bay, close to East Wittering & West Wittering.

Walk around the East Head – a National Trust area of one of the fastest moving sand and shingle spits at the entrance to Chichester Harbour.

If you are the outdoors type, go on the Chichester Harbour Tour and explore a variety of eco systems in the area from sand dunes and mudflats, to shingle banks and woodlands.

Lastly, don’t miss the sandy beaches of West Wittering and Selsey. If you can brave the cold, go for a swim!
