May Madness
‘The world’s favourite season is the spring.
All things seem possible in May.’Edwin Way Teale
(American naturalist, photographer & Pulitzer Prize-winning writer)
All things seem possible?
Well, maybe not quite all.
Apparently there’s some things you should do, but others you should definitely not do in May… 😉
5 things NOT to do in May
(According to old superstitions)
-
- Buy a broom (witches take note!)
- Wash blankets (great, you can put off that fun task for another month then).
- Get married – an old poem warns ‘Marry in May and you’ll rue the day’.
Apparently this little tip-off dates back to Pagan times, when the start of summer was celebrated with outdoor orgies, and was therefore considered an inappropriate time to begin married life! - Give birth – another belief was that May babies would be sick all through their childhood (yuk!)

- Look miserable – it’s National Smile Month! 🙂 🙂 🙂
5 things to do in May
-
- Eat seasonal ingredients including asparagus, new potatoes, watercress, gooseberries, nectarines and lamb (but not recommended altogether!)

In Germany, it was an old tradition to plant a ‘maypole’ to honour someone, so young men would set up a decorated birch in front of their girlfriend’s house. (Go on, you know she’d love it!)
- Wash your face with dew on 1st May. Some folk believed it would remove all freckles and pimples, leaving you with a miraculously clear complexion…we wish.
- Down a seasonal cocktail – click here for inspiration.
